Running Toward

Sometimes the walls begin to press inward. The only shine on the floor is the sunlight reflecting off millions of tiny cars and trains scattered about. Beds need changing, laundry needs folding, grout needs scrubbing and meals need preparing. Cruising through each room, tossing cars and trains into bins, I am horrified to hear behind me the sound of an entire bin being joyfully emptied onto the just cleaned up floor.

At these moments my fight or flight instinct kicks in. I have a habit of choosing flight. Scooping up my toddler, grabbing my purse and buckling in the van. Running away.

As my toddler gently falls asleep in the car seat I drive aimlessly, sipping a Starbuck's, savoring the sense of freedom being a stay at home mom brings.  It is possible to simply run away for an hour.

But then I return home. The mess awaits. The older boys return from school and the mess expands.

And then one day I don't flee the scene. I make a radical decision to escape at home. Homemade cup of coffee at hand, candle lit, toddler napping in his bed upstairs, I sit in the sunshine and begin to run toward God.  Prayer beads sparkle in the light, words fall from my lips like feathers creating a downy softness in my spirit. All is well.  All will be well.

I rise, renewed, reminded of the gift of this moment, this house, this life, ready to meet the mess with grace~filled eyes.

  1. Wowza! Loved. Every. Single. Word. You have a gift that sheds light on some of the exact feelings I have every day. How do you do that? Opening my computer every morning, I am excited to see what awaits me at Misty's Mornings!

  2. I know it’s Sunday morning – a long time since “Walking With Him Wednesday”. But it took a long time to get through the “Multitude Monday” posts – and still didn’t get past 140 or so.

    So I figured it was about “time” I started reading about “time”. And wow – you slowed it down, brought time to a halt. A miracle? No. Just God meeting you as you ran to him.

    I was blessed by your words today. Thank you.

    God be with you and yours

Locally Grown {stuffed green peppers recipe}

  Last weekend we took the whole family to a nearby produce stand.  We were craving something that tasted fresh from the garden and since I don't have my own garden, we found this place.     The fields were full of fall-colored flowered.  Can't wait for those cooler days to come.         But for now, we are reveling in the height of summer sunshine and produce.       It's easy to go overboard here and buy much more than you can use in the next few days.  I don't even like okra but they look so inviting in those cute blue crates.     These tomatoes inspired a caprese salad for lunch: tomato slices cut into quarters, hunks of fresh mozzarella, snipped basil leaves, salt, pepper and drizzles of olive oil and red wine vinegar.       These strawberries wound up being dunked in Silky Chocolate Fondue .       Every girl dreams of doing her shopping with one of these adorable woven b...

At the Water's Edge {52 Photos Project}

Sometimes I have to pinch myself that where we live, day after day, is actually a vacation destination for many people who come from far away to spend a weekend on the beach. They may have saved money for months to afford a few days splashing around in the waves and relaxing on the san that makes up our neighborhood. I feel such gratitude that I can zip down the beach road on a whim, as we did yesterday, with less than two hours to spare; we simply needed to swim in the sea. It was almost 100 degrees outside and the sun gleamed in a brilliant blue sky. So off we went, while Kai was at camp, to the beach.  The older two boys swam gleefully as I read Bread and Wine and dreamed of delicious meals to make my sun-kissed family for dinner. At one point I looked up and snapped this photo of my view. Then I pinched myself. This really is our home , our daily vacation spot, the place my boys have now lived for longer than anywhere else in their lives. We are living this beachy ...
